A Game of Thrones

Author: George R. R. Martin
Series: A Song of Ice and Fire 1
Publisher: Bantam Books
Genre: Fantasy

Thanks in large part to the HBO adaptation, A Game of Thrones, most people have at least heard of George R. R. Martin's fantasy epic, A Song of Ice and Fire. While the series ended on a sour note for most fans, the books have remained consistent throughout, a true sign that Martin's dedication to his world and characters cannot be understated.

To really unravel the plot of the first novel in the series, A Game of Thrones, would take some doing, but in simplest terms, it is the story of simple things spiraling out of control thanks to miscommunication and pride, and the struggle of a vivid cast of characters to survive through a war for the rule of the kingdom of Westeros.

Martin is a true veteran of genre fiction, and that shines through in A Game of Thrones. He has been commended for his highly realistic, layered portrayals of women, often overlooked in the fantasy genre, or reduced to stereotypes and surface deep characters. If you can dig into his dense, descriptive writing, you're in for a wild ride.
