Author: Jacqueline Carey
Series: Kushiel's Legacy 1
Genre: Political Fantasy
Most fantasy has a smattering of sex, but there's no guarantee that the author has approached it responsibly. Jacqueline Carey is an example of how it should be handled. Her novel series, Kushiel's Legacy, begins with Kushiel's Dart and kicks off in style. It tells the story of a holy prostitute named Phèdre nó Delaunay as she learns the ways of pleasure and harnesses her abilities to keep herself alive and her home country safe from threats both internal and external.
Carey's writing is dense but creates beautiful images. Beautiful, raunchy images. This is fantasy that could satisfy readers of Fifty Shades of Grey, in the highly intrigue-heavy style of A Game of Thrones. Most notably, Kushiel's Dart is deeply sex-positive. It touches on themes of BDSM and LGBTQ sexuality, and pushes women to a place of importance they would rarely enjoy in other series.
